Fenghuang Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List site since March 28, 2008, has been hailed as "the most beautiful town in China" by renowned New Zealand writer Rewi Alley. Established in 1704, this ancient town boasts a 300-year history and serves as a cultural melting pot for the Miao and Tujia ethnic minorities. Furong Town, famed as the shooting location for the iconic film "Hibiscus Town," is steeped in traditional charm. Here, you'll discover the unique stilted buildings of the Tujia people, cascading waterfalls, and a wealth of cultural treasures. Explore the temporary palace of the Tusi, a hereditary headman of the Jujia people, and wander along the stone slate streets. **Tusi:** The Tusi system, implemented during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties (1271 - 1911), involved the appointment of national minority hereditary headmen, playing a significant role in governing minority regions in ancient China.
**Hand-Waving Hall:** This cultural symbol of the Tujia ethnic group serves multiple purposes, including ancestor worship and hosting the Hand-Waving Dance, a traditional folk activity encompassing worship, prayer, singing, dancing, social interaction, sports competitions, and material exchange. These halls are typically constructed in the heart of Tujia settlements, with each area celebrating this tradition according to its own unique customs and timing.
**Hand-Waving Dance:** An ancient and captivating folk art form unique to the Tujia ethnic group, the Hand-Waving Dance integrates songs, dances, musical dramas, folk sports, and entertainment. It is widely popular in Tujia ethnic areas across western Hunan, western Hubei, and southeastern Chongqing, and is considered the most representative dance of the Tujia culture.
